This is the only way I can think to redeem myself – I must keep this up until the end of the year. R [the diarist’s boyfriend] came round after lunch + I discovered why he has been so cussed about our engagement. If he fails this class exam [in accountancy] a week on Friday it puts him back a WHOLE year. God, it’s really past thinking about.
We went to the club in the evening + drank with D [a friend] + his new girl friend J, who is from Shetland. She had gorgeous blue eyes + seems very nice. When we got home, R was as sick as anything + after I had dosed him with bicarb he became suddenly plastered. I could have [illegible] him but he looked so sweet + was so funny I could only laugh. Beetles indeed!
